Leveraging the built-in switching and routing capabilities of the RUGGEDCOM RX1500, the RUGGEDCOM APE is a utility-grade computing platform that plugs directly into any member of the RUGGEDCOM RX1500 family and makes it possible to run third party software applications without the complications and inconveniences of procuring an external industrial PC.
RUGGEDCOM APE is available pre-installed with Microsoft Windows 7 Embedded, Linux, and CheckPoint GAiA platforms. As it is compliant to the standards of a PC, the user can choose to install and run their customized operating system as they choose.
RUGGEDCOM APE provides one Gigabit Ethernet link on the front of the unit, and another equal, but completely separated link to the backplane of the RX15xx chassis. This physical separation of ports and the special arrangement of the connections on RUGGEDCOM APE make it an ideal platform for networking and security-related applications, examples of which are security appliances, firewalls, network log and load processors, and intrusion sensors.
Through the use of a virtual machine, old software can be run on new and secure operating systems on the RUGGEDCOM APE, making it possible to extend the life of obsolete and unsupported software. All variants of RUGGEDCOM APE are available with optional conformal coating, and are qualified for operating ambient temperatures of -40º C to +70º C. It meets all the electrical specifications of the RUGGEDCOM RX15xx platform, namely IEC61850-3 and IEEE 1613 for operation under some of the harshest industrial conditions.

Until now, on-site data processing required the installation of separate hardware in addition to the routers. The RUGGEDCOM VPE1400 is a software that partitions off a separate virtual environment in the router where users can install a Linux operating system and load their own self-generated programs or those of service providers.
The partitions ensure that the programs never interfere with actual router operation – not even if the programs malfunction and, for example, take up too much processor power. The virtual environment enables an application to connect via all network interfaces on the RUGGEDCOM RX1400 router – LTE, copper, fiber-optic – and with serial transmission interfaces. Special application interfaces also enable communication with devices integrated into SCADA systems for control and monitoring purposes.
This new software is part of the trend toward communication networks with distributed computing capacities in which, as much as possible, data is processed on site rather than centrally. Experts are referring to “fog” or “edge computing.” Such technologies are a key requirement for integrating a growing number of devices into an ever more distributed Industrial Internet of Things and operating them efficiently.
